We currently have seven full time positions available for second year interns only. Unfortunately, we do not offer practicum hours.

PROGRAM GOALS:

To develop excellent clinical skills in order to work effectively with varied populations in both a long and short term framework.  In addition, interns will acquire skills to consult and teach in a medical setting.  Interns will become knowledgeable in working directly with managed mental health care, Medi-Cal, Medi-Care and private pay.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct clinical services: Assessment and referral as well as short and long-term therapy with approximately 20 patients per week (32-40 hours weekly).

The population includes:

  • Adults
  • Children
  • Adolescents
  • Couples and families

Teaching medical residents how to identify psychosocial issues, assessment and appropriate referral in the community. 

Lecturing in the area of behavioral science for bi-weekly noon conferences.  Topics to include: attention deficit disorders, depression, anxiety, somatic disorders, substance abuse and mental status exams.

Opportunities to work in a residential drug treatment program, as well as co-facilitating groups in the hospital. Interns can also provide psychotherapy to nursing home patients in the community.

 Psychology interns will be observed treating patients via videotapes on a weekly basis. and will receive 2 hours of individual supervision and 2 hours of group supervision weekly.

 Wednesdays group supervision 10:00-11:00 and 2:00-3:00.

 QUALIFICATIONS FOR ACCEPTANCE

  • Self motivated
  • Ability to work independently
  • Previous counseling experience
  • Openness to supervision that addresses patient and therapist dynamics
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Assertiveness in varied professional situations with physicians
  • Desire to take risks and accept challenges in a professional environment

Internship begins Sept 1, and ends Aug 30th each year

STIPEND

There is no stipend at this time, but two meals per working day are provided.
