Susanne's topic this week is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is emergency care for newborns. We meet Dr. John Mapp, a neonatologist at Glendale Adventist and he explains why babies come to the NICU and how they are cared for once they get there. One of Dr. Mapp's patients also comes on the show, Ricky Montes, now 2-years old, along with his parents, Samantha and Brian. They tell their story of having Ricky by emergency cesarean section at only 25 weeks - Ricky weighed just one pound when he was born.
Episode 5 wraps up with an interview with Dr. Brian Bursch, a pediatrician with Glendale Pediatrics. He talks with Susanne about caring for an infant once they come home and the importance of getting vaccinations (watch Episode 6 - "H1N1 and Vaccines", click here)
