Gastric Bypass Surgery

Roux-en-Y gastric bypassGastric bypass, performed at Glendale Adventist Medical Center, is both a restrictive and mal absorptive procedure. The stomach is made smaller ( 30 cc) and the small bowel is made shorter. This procedure is also done laproscopically and usually requires the patients to stay two to three days inpatient.

Food passes from the esophagus into the smaller pouch, then into the bypassed section of bowel ( jejunum) which decreases absorption, digestive juices from the stomach, liver, and pancreas pass through the duodenum and jejunum and mix in the limb, the food then passes through the rest of the bowel and is excreted. This procedure is not reversible and produces a rapid weight loss.
