Living in Glendale

The City of Glendale is a thriving community located in a spectacular setting at the base of the Verdugo Mountains just north of downtown Los Angeles. It is the third largest city in Los Angeles County, with a population of 200,000. The city covers more than 30 square miles. Its wide, shaded streets and excellent transportation system make getting around safe and convenient.

During the fall and winter months the unique Santa Ana wind conditions affect the local weather and bring warm, dry air from the northeast, which results in a temperate climate. Snowfall is confined to the region's nearby mountains. The average high temperature in Glendale is 77 degrees, and the average rainfall is 17.82 inches per year.


Glendale and its surrounding communities offer a wide range of job opportunities. Within the past few years, Glendale has become one of the major financial centers in Southern California - and by some estimates, the third-largest financial center in the entire state of California. The city's economy is dominated primarily by retail and service industries. Wholesale and manufacturing also play a minor role.

Education and Childcare

The Glendale Unified School District has a respected reputation as a leader in educational quality. The District expresses a deep commitment to helping students meet high standards that will prepare them to become productive citizens. As such, Glendale Unified is committed to providing a safe and supportive school environment that values high quality teaching and learning.

Among the many childcare options in Glendale is one excellent choice that is particularly convenient of Glendale Adventist Medical Center employees. The hospital has its own Childcare Center located right on campus. The program offers stimulating play and learning activities for children, all in a safe, modern, child-friendly atmosphere.

For post-high school students, Glendale Community College is one of California's largest two-year colleges. Other nearby institutions of higher learning include Occidental College, the University of Southern California (USC), the California Institute of Technology and the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA).

Shopping and Recreation

Glendale has a large variety of specialty shops, department and chain stores. Many shopping choices include the Glendale Galleria, one of Southern California's largest shopping malls, the Americana, as well as a lively shopping district throughout downtown.

Cultural opportunities abound, including numerous fine-dining establishments of all ranges of cultures and flavors, a symphony orchestra, and live theater houses. In addition, Glendale offers a number of movie theatres, small art galleries, historic sites and community events.

There are more than 30 parks in Glendale for recreation and enjoyment. In addition, there are six libraries throughout the city including the Brand Library, which houses an art gallery and music collection.

Glendale is just minutes away from the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Park, and other major Los Angeles attractions, including the recreation areas of the Angeles National Forest. Pasadena is 10 minutes away, Hollywood is 15 minutes, and downtown Los Angeles is about 20 minutes away. Beaches, ski resorts and desert recreational centers are all a short drive away from the city.
