LOS ANGELES, CA - On February 24, 2011 a Glendale Adventist Medical Center (GAMC) heart patient became the first patient in L.A. County to receive the new MRI-compatible pacemaker.

Many people with pacemakers have typically avoided MRI scans because magnetic waves can interfere with a pacemaker and cause damage to its components, dislodge it or cause changes in pacing. The technology in the new pacemakers gives people who have the devices new options to test for other problems.

The pacemaker (manufactured by Medtronic) uses special software that can be programmed to avoid malfunction caused by magnetic waves.

"This breakthrough technology provides many more options for patients with pacemakers," said Edgar Aleman, MD, Glendale Adventist physician and surgeon who implanted the device. "Now they don't have to forego important tests because of their pacemakers."

Whether for diagnosis or treatment, The Heart & Vascular Institute at Glendale Adventist Medical Center offers comprehensive services in all aspects of cardiovascular care. To learn more, please call (818) 409-8100.
