LOS ANGELES, CA – August 5, 2010 – Blue Shield of California has designated Glendale Adventist Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care. Of the 5,800 hospitals in the United States, only about 400 have achieved this designation.

Blue Distinction Centers for Cardiac Care demonstrate their commitment to quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for cardiac patients. To receive this designation, Glendale Adventist Medical Center met evidence-based clinical criteria, developed in collaboration with expert physicians’ and medical organizations, including the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), and is subject to periodic re-evaluation as criteria continue to evolve.

“We are very proud of this designation. It demonstrates our commitment to patient safety, satisfaction and quality for better overall outcomes of our cardiac patients. Our multidisciplinary team of physicians, surgeons, nurses, technicians, educators and therapists work closely together to ensure that patients have the best and most successful experience,” said Robert Marchuk, vice president of Ancillary Services at Glendale Adventist.

The Heart & Vascular Institute at Glendale Adventist Medical Center offers comprehensive cardiovascular services including angioplasty, stent implantation, pacemaker and cardiac defibrillator implantation, heart surgery, electrophysiology, angioplasty, neurovascular procedures, beating heart surgery, endoscopic vein harvesting and an outpatient cardiac imaging center.

“Blue Distinction puts a high value on research and evidence-based health and medical information,” says Allan Korn, MD, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Chief Medical Officer. “Blue Distinction Centers show our commitment to working with doctors and hospitals in communities across the country to identify leading institutions that meet clinically validated quality standards and deliver better overall outcomes in patient care.”

To be designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care, Glendale Adventist Medical Center met the selection criteria posted at, which includes:

  • An established cardiac care program, performing required annual volumes for certain procedures (e.g. a minimum of 125 cardiac surgical procedures annually, including both CABG and/or valve surgery)
  • Appropriate experience of its cardiac team, including sub-specialty board certification for interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons
  • An established acute care inpatient facility, including intensive care, emergency and a full range of cardiac services
  • Full accreditation by The Joint Commission
  • Low overall complication and mortality rates
  • A comprehensive quality management program
“At Glendale Adventist Medical Center, we believe in a healthier community. Our Glendale Adventist Heart & Vascular Institute services are built on our mission of treating the whole person. We don’t just treat the disease, we focus on prevention and education to help patients get healthy and stay healthy,” said Joseph Bornheimer, MD, Medical Director of the Heart & Vascular Institute.
