The last structural beam hoisted atop hospital’s Phase II and Phase III expansion will mark successful completion of the highest point of construction for Glendale Adventist
Construction workers as well as Glendale Adventist Medical Center employees, physicians and other community supporters will be in attendance on May 18 to watch the last structural beam be hoisted atop the six story building by a 267 foot (reach) crane. Phase II will house the hospital’s inpatient imaging department and a visitor waiting area for the operating room. Phase III is set up to accommodate 38 future inpatient telemetry beds and 20 additional critical care beds.
The beam will be available for hospital visitors and staff to sign from Monday, May 10 through the event date (the beam will be painted white to stand out from the other beams).
Topping Off ceremonies date back to 1898 in Norway and were introduced to the United States by Scandinavian construction workers. The placement of a small evergreen tree and American flag to the ends of the beam are a strong part of this tradition. The ceremony acknowledges the safe and successful attainment of the highest point of construction of a cherished tradition.
Hospital, Abbott Construction and Glendale City officials will speak about Phase II and Phase III construction milestone as well as the importance of this building project and what it means to the community.
The crane, which can hold up to six tons at the tip will lift the last structural beam atop the six story Patient Care Tower structure as guests watch construction workers bolt it in place. An American flag will be placed on that structural beam to acknowledge the safe and successful attainment of the highest point of construction.
