Assemblymember Krekorian Helps Celebrate Children's Center
One month after opening its doors, the GAMC Community Children’s Center in Montrose hosted State Assemblymember Paul Krekorian along with several GAMC administrators, directors and parents on a tour of the new facility. “We were pleased to have Assemblymember Krekorian tour our facility,” said Judy Crawford, director of Children’s Center Services. “He’s very supportive of projects like this and is an advocate for early education”
Site Director Jenny Hueter beamed as she showed Krekorian and GAMC officials the new space, which includes refurbished classrooms and play areas. “Parents and staff were very committed to making the move a success,” said Jenny. “They raised over $70,000 through donations and fundraisers to make the necessary improvements.”
The Community Children’s Center moved to the new space in Montrose after learning that the lease in their former location in central Glendale could not be renewed. The new Center in Montrose is located in the educational wing of the Light on the Corner Church, which was used mainly for Sunday school and storage. “We could see the potential and it was perfect because of the large outdoor area,” said Judy. “But we knew it would take effort from everyone to pull it together in such a short time.”
“Work bees” and fundraisers soon became a part of a routine and the Center got a big boost when JR Abbot, the construction company working on the hospital expansion, donated over $15,000 in money and materials including new windows, flooring, carpet and even central air.
And while the new center in Montrose is several miles from its old location in Glendale, many families still feel the childcare offered is worth the drive. “We have 60 of our 68 spots filled and nearly all our families transferred with us up to our new location,” said Judy. “To me, this speaks volumes about the quality of childcare we provide.”
