Psychiatric Institute

The range of behavioral health services provided by our Inpatient Psychiatry is unsurpassed by any hospital in the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys. Comprised of three different units, this 60-bed neighborhood provides exceptional acute care.

Psych Acute
This 21-bed general psychiatry unit provides interactive, program-based care. Patients are allowed as much freedom of movement and choice as they can safely manage. Patients have their own dining area as well as seperate access to an enclosed patio. There is a jacuzzi in the patio area within view of the nursing station and is open to patients with staff supervision. Activities are offered on the unit and in the Adjunctive Therapy Clinic located on the same floor. Nurses work with a multidisciplinary team to treat patients through:

• General psychiatric care
• Dual-diagnosis treatment
• Complex case management

Psych Special Programs
The Special Programs unit is a 20-bed specialty unit that works specifically to treat patients with a primary psychiatric illness and who are also physically ill and/or will benefit from this environment. The unite provides its own living and dining areas as well as a seperate patio. Activites are offered on the unit and in the Adjunctive Therapy Clinic located on the same floor. Nurses usually work with patients recovering from:

• Co-occurring psychiatric illness
• Chemical dependency

Psych Intensive Care
This 19-bed locked unit provides for patients who need intensive observation and supervision or who are experiencing impairment of a serious nature needing close attnetion and intensive treatment. The unit includes areas for dining and living and provides a high-security area of six rooms with audio and video monitoring, which may be used to decreasestimulation and provide additional physical safety. Two enclosed patio areas are available, one for patient use at any time and one used only with staff supervision. Nurses work with patients through a highly individualized and intensive treatment program, which can include:

• Emergency psychiatric crisis intervention
• Return-to-life programs
• Somatic therapies
• Neuro-psychiatric clinical trials

Nurses are integral members of the mulitdisciplinary team in the Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP). Nurses work with patients to develop, provide and constatnly evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for each unique person. The services of the Outpatient programs address a wide variety of patient needs including:

• Issues related to an individual's personal development
• Crisis related to aging
• Challenges with returning to work after a serious illness
• Complexities of co-occuring disorders
• Recovery from a serious mental illness

One of the leading residential chemical dependency treatment programs in the Los Angeles area, Glendale Adventist Alcohol and Drug Services (GAADS) is recognized throughout California as a model for the treatment of persons suffering from these addictive disorders. Nurses are at the heart of the treatment team, working with the patients and all the team members in creation and execution of an individualized care plan that focuses on the whole person and their family.
