An outstanding program of pre-operative education and therapy helps to ensure that joint replacement patients have the best experience possible before surgery, immediately afterward and during their recovery period at home.
Educational sessions give patients important information about what will happen during their hospital stay and also help them prepare for the post-surgical recovery period.
The sessions are lead by members of Glendale Adventist's nursing and physical therapy staff, who are glad to answer questions and explain the process in-depth. Groups are small for each session. Topics include:
- The pre-admission process
- What to expect during the hospital stay
- Exercise, activity and self-care
- Equipment used during hospitalization and at home
- Planning a safe return home
Sessions are held Mondays at 3PM.
For most patients who are scheduled for major orthopedic surgery - such as joint replacement - pre-operative therapy provides a head start on the rehabilitation process by stretching and strengthening the muscles around the joint.
Patients who can benefit from pre-operative therapy receive a prescription from their doctor for one-on-one sessions with a physical therapist from the Glendale Adventist Therapy & Wellness Center.
For some patients, pre-operative therapy includes treatment in the Rehabilitation Institute's indoor therapeutic pool. Patients who have limited movement because of pain will appreciate the buoyancy and warmth of the water, which provides a soothing and safe environment in which to perform pre-surgical stretching and strengthening exercises.
Patients who can benefit from pre-operative education or therapy are encouraged to call Patient Access Services at (818) 409-8235 to reserve a space or register online.
