The intensive outpatient treatment program (IOP) is recommended when a person with a dependency illness has living circumstances and daily structure such as a work or school time commitments that are supportive for recovery. IOP is best for persons who have never had chemical dependency treatment before, but have had multiple serious life problems directly due to drug or alcohol abuse. GAADS delivers this service typically in the evenings and over the weekend, in a manner that would allow a person to stay at work or some other important commitment.
Persons admitted to IOP are seen for a history and physical examination by a qualified physician since they have often neglected or impaired their physical health. In-depth assessments by counselors and therapists lead to highly individualized treatment planning. Twelve-step recovery participation is required. IOP can be provided during the daytime, as much as six days per week, but is more often provided four days per week, as follows:

Ideally IOP follows a path of eight weeks, or 32 sessions. Many times, IOP is provided following stabilization from another level of care, including detoxification, residential or day treatment. Discharge from IOP occurs upon completion of a written first step and treatment plans, education, 12-step recovery goals, family involvement and discharge planning. Continuing care is structured in three phases, of six weeks, four months and six months. During Phase II and III, we offer multi-family therapy, couples group and three opportunities per week for patient groups led by a counselor or therapist. A special commencement ceremony takes place at six months, followed by weekly patient groups and a codependency group is included for family members alone. Continuing care is included in the price of IOP.
