Delivering Care Where It Is Needed

Glendale Adventist Medical Center is committed to providing care for the whole person. Yet that care is only helpful when it reaches the people who need it. Many times, this requires efforts that extend beyond the walls of the hospital to the places where people live, work, learn, worship, shop and socialize.

Our community outreach services and programs help address the needs of people in our community who may otherwise not receive help. Listed below are a few of the outreach services and programs we offer and support.

Parish Nurse Program

Working with local churches to provide a wide range of medical and social services, Glendale Adventist Medical Center's Parish Nurse Program helps identify and assist older adults at risk for institutionalization and provides chaplain services to organizations whose clients need spiritual care.

Hearts N' Health

This program brings health education topics such as cardiovascular health, nutrition, physical activity and stress management into the homes of Armenian residents. The Hearts N' Health program trains Armenian women with no prior medical education in both presentation style and subject matter to conduct these presentations.

Today's Health

Airing weekly on Armenian cable access television, Today's Health addresses health issues affecting the Armenian community. The show's host facilitates guest physician interviews, community health resource sharing and health topic discussions on nutrition, fitness, stress management and substance abuse. Today's Health complements Hearts N' Health activities.

Glendale Healthy Kids

A community-based collaborative relationship among health care providers throughout Glendale, Healthy Kids provides free medical and dental care, therapy and other health services to children of families unable to afford health care. CINCO

Glendale Adventist facilitated this organization's development in northeast Los Angeles, where 50 percent of students never graduate from high school and 50 percent of pregnancies are among teenagers. CINCO offers hope for the future through technology training programs, in cooperation with the local school district and social service agencies. Click here to visit their Web site.

Community Health Screening Programs

Initially, participants answer questionnaires to identify if they have any risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes or pulmonary disease. Those considered at moderate or high risk will then receive the following screenings:

• Cardiovascular Screening - Blood pressure, cholesterol, C-reactive protein (CRP)
  The presence of CRP, which can be produced by stress, inflammation or infection, is considered a more reliable indicator of the risk of an impending heart attack than more traditional tests.
• Diabetes Screening - Two hour oral glucose tolerance test (2 hr-OGTT)
• Pulmonary Screening - Pulmonary function test (spirometry)
