Faculty & Current Residents

Teachers in the Center are a mix of full-time and volunteer faculty. Faculty in other specialties come to the Center as consultants and teach the residents in cardiology, endocrinology, dermatology, surgery, orthopedics, ENT, clinical pharmacology, nutrition, behavioral science, obstetrics and pediatrics.

Janet Cunningham, MD, MPH, MBA

Added Qualifications - Geriatrics

Dr. Cunningham has been with Glendale Adventist FPRP since 1990. She graduated from Wright State University School of Medicine. She spent her residency years at Saint Joseph's Medical Center in South Bend, Indiana.

She is a member of the American College of Physician Executives, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, CMA, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and American Medical Woman's Association, Association of Clinicians for the Underserved. She also holds a certificate of added qualification in Geriatric Medicine, a Master's Degree in Public Health from UCLA and recently earned her MBA.

After four years of family medicine practice in rural Mississippi, Dr. Cunningham moved to Southern California and accepted a clinical/administrative position at Cigna Healthplans. She began residency teaching in 1990 and enjoys the wide scope and continuity of family practice.

In addition to administering the residency program, she maintains active inpatient office and obstetrics privileges. The Los Angeles area is the best place in the world to live, according to her, because of the excitement of the city and its amazing cultural diversity.


Marina Khubesrian, MD

Added Qualifications - Addiction Medicine

Dr. Khubesrian graduated from UCLA Medical School. She was also a former resident of Glendale Adventist Family Practice Residency Program. She joined the FPRP faculty in 1996.

Dr. Khubesrian has served as the medical director of the Glendale Adventist Alcohol and Drug Services (GAADS) since 1998. As co-director of the Family Practice Residency Program, alongside Dr. Cunningham, she shares in the leadership and administration duties for our faculty and program.

Dr. Khubesrian enjoys practicing and teaching the full scope of Family Practice in the culturally diverse community of Glendale, and is glad to have opportunities to use her Armenian and Spanish language skills. She facilitated the resident Balint group for three years where the doctor-patient relationship is explored, and values her mentoring relationship with residents. She enjoys gardening, reading and spending time with her husband and two small children.


Sirvard Khanoyan, MD 
Physician Faculty
Medical Director of Family Medicine Center

Dr. Sirvard Khanoyan graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree from UCLA (Physiological Science in 1997). She completed her residency training in Family Practice at Glendale Adventist Family Practice Residency Program and joined the faculty after completing her training in 2004. She leads the clinical teams with conviction and enthusiasm as FMC medical director.

Dr. Khanoyan was born in Armenia and lived there until the age of 12. She has great fondness for her extended family and even greater fondness for her two daughters and husband, who is also a physician. In addition to English, she is fluent in Armenian and speaks limited Spanish. Her hobbies include arts, crafts and traveling.


Warren Churg, MD
Associate Director of Inpatient Training

Dr. Churg is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in 1978 and has been a faculty member at Glendale Adventist FPRP since 1981.

Dr. Churg is a member of the American College of Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. He is an associate professor at Loma Linda University and University of Southern California.
He was voted the Outstanding Teacher of the Year at USC ICM for the year 2000. Dr. Churg is an avid photographer and woodworking aficionado.


Jack Yu, MD
Associate Program Director
Added Qualifications - Geriatrics, Sports Medicine

Dr. Yu is a graduate of Boston University Medical School. He completed his residency at UCLA. His affiliations include The American Geriatric Society, The Christian Medical and Dental Association and The Society of Teachers of Family Practice.

Dr. Yu came to Glendale Adventist FPRP in 1990 and his roles include coordination of the Geriatrics and Sports Medicine curriculums.

Dr. Yu is a past president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the AAFP. He is currently a board member of the California Academy of Family Practice. He is also the team doctor for Glendale Community College. Dr. Yu has twice been named "Teacher of the Year" by FPRP residents. He is married and has two darling daughters.


Julie A. Howard, MD
Clinical Faculty
Director of Women's Health

Dr. Julie Howard joins the clinical faculty of the residency program as Director of Women's Health.  She graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan and from residency training in Austin, Texas.  In addition to her residency in Family Medicine, Dr. Howard completed a fellowship in Obstetrics, also in Austin.

Prior to moving to the Glendale area, she had the unique opportunity to work for the Indian Health Service on the Navajo Nation in Arizona for several years.  She is happy to be living in an urban area again with all of its cultural diversity.  Although she has special interests in Women's Health and Obstetrics, caring for the entire family is why she became a family doctor.  Outside of work, Dr. Howard enjoys walks with her husband and their two dogs.  She also does yoga and knits to keep herself at peace with the world. James P. Cornell, MD
Clinical Faculty
Medical Director of Descanso Family Practice

Dr. Cornell is the Medical Director of the Descanso Family Practice. This is a newly launched satellite Family Practice in the picturesque Verdugo Hills. He has expertise in Practice Management and Rural Medicine.

Dr. Cornell graduated from Loma Linda University and is also a former resident of Glendale Adventist, FPRP. He took a teaching position with FPRP in August 1995. Dr. Cornell has a rich medical/teaching history that includes a Clinical Professorship at University of Washington (School of Medicine). He was Chief of Staff at Odessa Memorial Hospital in Odessa, Washington.

Dr. Cornell enjoys sports, especially volleyball, wrestling and Twister. Can you make music on any of these instruments: bongos, voicebox, recorder, electric bass, guitar, trombone or cello? Dr. Cornell can.
 

Katrina Miller, MD
Clinical Faculty
 

Dr. Katrina Miller is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine who comes to the Descanso Family Practice after six years at the University of Southern California. Dr. Miller was an assistant professor at the Keck School of Medicine and Family Medicine Residency, co-chair for the Core Principles Course and medical director for the Physicians' Assistant Program. Upon completing her BA at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Miller received her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. She completed her Family Medicine residency locally at UCLA-Westwood. She has worked in student health and all aspects of family medicine with particular interest in adolescent medicine, women and men's sexual health, psychology and psychiatry as well as dermatology. Her writing has been published in journals and texts and she continues research in primary care education. Personal interests include internet media, music, and the arts.


Beth Marcus, MD
Clinical Faculty

Dr. Beth Marcus has worked in the Glendale area since she began her residency here in 1986. She is a graduate of Albany Medical College in New York and also completed a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.

Dr. Marcus spends most of her time at Descanso Family Practice satellite faculty practice site. Many of her patients are glad to see she has returned after a brief absence to work with Kaiser, then to add twin boys to her family.

In November 2001, Dr. Marcus became one of fewer than 100 family physicians in the country to pass the Adolescent Medicine Board examination. She enjoys the whole range of family practice and especially welcomes teens and their families.

In her free time, Dr. Marcus enjoys being with her family, reading, knitting and gardening.


Samir Sawiris, MD
Clinical Faculty

Dr. Sawiris is a clinical faculty member at Family Medicine Center. He joined the group in November 2000.

His practice is limited to adult and geriatric medicine. Dr. Sawiris graduated from the School of Medicine Assuit University-Egypt. He finished his internship and residency in internal Medicine at USC/LAC in 1991.

Since then, Dr. Sawiris has been practicing in the Glendale area. He believes preventive medicine is a way of living a long, healthy life.

Dr. Sawiris enjoys reading medical magazines and journals, and playing tennis and chess.
